Description
Calcaire taillé ; 'Sur un bloc primastique ayant les dimensions suivantes : largeur, 0m75 ; hauteur, 0m19 ; épaisseur, 0m58, on lit en deux lignes le fragment d'inscription qui précède. Les caractères en sont fortement endommagés dans le haut de la première ligne, et dans le bas de la seconde. Un premier examen insuffisant nous avait fait lire : I CLARISSIM et nous avait fait attribuer cette pierre au tombeau d'une femme de sénateur, décoré, suivant l'usage, du titre de 'Clarissime' ; mais un examen plus attentif nous a fait rejeter cette première attribution. La lecture que nous donnons aujourd'hui est certaine et nous croyons que l'interprétation vraie est : ' (fil)io karissim(o) castiss(imo) fid(elissimo) '. Il serait ici question d'un fils, auquel une mère éplorée donne toutes les qualités possibles, exagérées encore par son violent chagrin : 'A mon fils très chéri, très chaste, trè fidèle'. ' (Julliot)
