Toché : Nantes 1851-Paris 1916 Peintre, décorateur, aquarelliste, illustrateur. Après des études d'architecture, Toché séjourne cinq ans à Venise où il étudie et copie les oeuvres des Italiens, il y fait la rencontre de Manet. On lui confie la décoration du château de Chenonceaux. Pendant dix ans, il se consacre à ce travail, ornant de fresques historiques et allégoriques la grande galerie du château. En 1887 Charles Toché expose à la galerie Petit un grand nombre d'aquarelles, dont les cartons des fresques de Chenonceaux. Cette exposition le fait connaître du public parisien qui apprécie la beauté de ses couleurs et son imagination féconde. En dehors des décors réalisés pour l'Exposition universelle de 1900, il peint aussi des fresques pour le théâtre de Nantes et l'Olympia à Paris. Lors de son travail à Chenonceaux il rencontre Flaubert, se lie d'amitié avec lui, il estime beaucoup ses écrits et illustre son étude 'La tentation de St Antoine'. LP 23/XI/1995
