METZINGER : Nantes, 1883 ; Paris, 1956 ; D'origine nantaise, il vient à Paris en 1903 pour étudier la médecine, objectif qu'il abandonne aussitôt pour s'engager dans la voie de la peinture. Après avoir regardé du côté du néo-impressionnisme, autour de 1905-1906, puis du cubisme de Braque et Picasso, il retourne à la leçon de Cézanne pour construire son propre langage. Si Metzinger s'inspire de ' sujets ' traditionnels, ils ne sont en réalité que le support à une organisation formelle de la toile. Il s'intéresse à la qualité plastique de ses sujets devenant objets architectoniques de la structure du tableau . En 1912, proche de Jacques Villon, il écrit avec son ami Albert Gleizes une sorte de manifeste intitulé Du cubisme. Ce sont avant tout les idées spécifiques des deux peintres qui s'y expriment. L'objectif principal de Metzinger s'affirme alors dans une peinture en quête d'harmonie. Très tôt mobilisé, il est réformé en 1915 et rentre à Paris. A l'occasion d'un séjour en Touraine il retrouve Juan Gris et Lipchitz. Ses peintures se structurent encore un peu plus. En 1921, il s'engage dans ce qu'il nomme ' le réalisme constructif ', synthèse de son expression cubiste et d'une volonté d'exprimer des éléments figuratifs aisément identifiables
