Très vite, les capacités dartiste et de naturaliste de Leuseur, lui permettent de rejoindre lexpédition scientifique. Le capitaine Nicolas Baudin (1754-1803) apprécie tellement son travail quil le charge dillustrer les journaux de bord. Avec François Péron (1775-1810), il endosse la fonction de naturaliste après la mort du zoologiste de l'expédition, René Maugé de Cely. Avec Péron, ils collectionnent plus de 100 000 spécimens zoologiques
