En mai 238, les empereurs Pupien et Balbin poussés par le peuple adoptent le jeune Gordien et font de lui un César. Après la chute de Balbin et Pupien, Gordien III est proclamé empereur le 23 ou 29 Juillet 238. Sa jeunesse, il n'a que treize ans, fait que c'est le préfet du prétoire, Timésithée, qui gouverne l'empire dés 241. Sa plus grande réalisation est la campagne qu'il mène contre les Perses sassanides qu'il réussit à repousser au-delà de l'Euphrate. En 243, Timésithée meurt et l'empereur ne lui survit par. Il meurt le 25 Février 244 blessé lors d'une bataille ou assassiné par l'armée qui choisit comme empereur Philippe l'Arabe
