Parcours atypique pour cet artiste autodidacte issu d'une très ancienne famille de Picardie, d'abord formé au dessin industriel, qui invente un moteur d'avion, pense une Formule 1 à 6 roues, puis abandonne sa carrière technique pour ne plus se consacrer qu'à sa production artistique. Intime des Surréalistes et des habitués du Café de Flore, Tony Gonnet fut aussi une figure du quartier parisien de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Il a notamment fréquenté les frères Prévert, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Boris Vian, Simone Signoret, Henri Crolla, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, ou encore Jean Genet (qui préfacera sa première exposition à Paris en 1952).
