C'est en 1896 que François Vialatte crée à Oyonnax un 'Studio d'Art', immortalisant ainsi aussi bien les Oyonnaxiens que leur cadre de vie et de travail. Ses cartes postales retracent la vie de la cité : rues, bâtiments, manifestations sportives ou culturelles, ouvriers au travail. En 1898, Alphonse Gauthier apporte son savoir-faire, acquis aux Etablissements Lumière de Lyon. Il prend possession du fonds Vialatte en 1900, ouvre des succursales à Saint-Claude en 1911 puis Nantua en 1924. Victime de la grande crise de 1929, Alphonse Gauthier cesse son activité en 1931
