GAGNERAUX : Dijon, 1756 ; Florence, 1795 ; Tout au long de sa carrière, soit dans des études d'après nature soit en lien avec des oeuvres nordiques (Wouwermans, Rubens, Stubbs), soit en utilisant des ouvrages de référence comme Dell' anatomia et Dell' infirmita del Cavallo de Carlo Ruini (1598), il met en scène avec vérité et élégance de magnifiques chevaux. Il débute avec les commandes des Etats de Bourgogne de 1787-89 en peignant les batailles du grand Condé et poursuit à la fin de sa vie avec des combats de cavalerie ou des esquisses de bataille. Le mouvement et l'énergie des animaux sauvages l'ont aussi vivement intéressé, les représentations de lions, roi des animaux, luttant, combattant ou plus pacifique, seront nombreuses (comme en témoignent les chasses au lion de Florence, Brême, Dijon).
