Venise, 1709 ; Venise, 1769 ; Ce tableau, et son pendant (Bx E 256), sont deux oeuvres typiques de Francesco Fontebasso, élève de Sebastiano Ricci que l'on a quelquefois confondu avec son maître, et de la même génération que Giambattista Tiepolo, avec qui il fut un des principaux continuateurs de la grande tradition décorative vénitienne. Sa touche se reconnaît à sa rondeur colorée à dominante rouge, qu'il manie avec une nervosité scintillante particulièrement sensible dans ses tableaux narratifs de format réduit, comme ici, où il excellait à surprendre sur le vif et dans une lumière crue le geste significatif. La monumentalité de ces petites compositions religieuses les a parfois fait prendre pour des esquisses de tableaux plus imposants. M. Magrini propose avec raison de voir dans ce tableau la présence de saint François de Paule avec un autre frère de l'ordre des minimes, dont le mot 'Charitas' inscrit sur la hampe du bâton était la devise, plutôt que saint Paul avec saint François
