CLAUDE I, EMPEREUR : Claude : nom latin : Tiberius Claudius Nero Drusus. Né le 1er Août de l'an 10 avant JC à Lyon. Fils de Drusus Decimus Nero, frère de Germanicus et d'Antonia la Jeune. Il succède à son neveu Caligula. De santé fragile, il n'exerce aucune carrière avant d'être nommé empereur. De nature soumise, il vit dans la crainte de ses proches, essentiellement des femmes, qui lui reprochent sa nature chétive, délicate, sans caractère. . Il apparaît pourtant comme le garant de la paix et de l'ordre civil et il mène l'empire d'une main ferme. Claude devient empereur à cinquante ans à la mort de Caligula, le 25 Janvier 41. Il est le premier empereur romain porté au pouvoir par les prétoriens en échange d'une prime, le donatium, pour s'assurer de leur fidélité. Ses principales réalisations étant l'amélioration de l'approvisionnement de Rome en eau, il amorce la conquête de la Bretagne et renforce les frontières de l'empire. Sa seconde femme, Agrippine le fait vraisemblablement empoisonné dans la nuit du 12 Octobre 54, dans le but de placer sur le trône son fils, Néron à la place de Britannicus, fils de Claude et Messaline
