BASSET : Dynastie d'éditeurs de vues d'optique. Le fondateur de cette dynastie est Antoine Basset, died 1760. On relève des estampes de lui vers 1720. En 1773, son adresse est 'A Paris chez Basset l'Ainé, rue Saint-Jacques, à la Comète d'Or'. André Basset, dit le Jeune, est son frère. Au début, il est à l'enseigne de Sainte-Geneviève, rue Saint-Jacques, au coin de la rue des Mathurins. Il déménage dans une maison qu'il achète où 'était ci-devant pour enseigne le Nom de Jésus, puis les Armes de Hollande, enfin Saint-Nicolas'. Il rachète en 1775 les planches gravées de Daumont et de Lachaussée. C'est la raison pour laquelle on trouve sur une vue d'optique représentant la Place Royale les mentions suivantes : à gauche 'Présentement chez Lachaussée, rue Saint-Jacques' ; au centre, en dessous du titre 'présentement chez Basset, rue Saint-Jacques, au coin de celle des Mathurins. Il tient une Fabrique de Papier' ; à droite 'A Paris, chez Daumont, Rue Saint Martin'. Paul-André Basset est le fils d'André Basset. Il est actif sous le Consulat et l'Empire.
