Paris, 4 juillet 1825 ; Saint-Michel-de-Chavaignes (Sarthe), 20 avril 1909 ; belle-fille du sculpteur Pierre Hébert avec qui elle se formera ; Française ; Mariée une première fois à Augustin Allelit, elle vivra en concubinage dès 1856 avec Léon Bertaux dont elle prend le nom, comme nom d'artiste, avant de pouvoir enfin l'épouser en 1866 ; Elle sera la fondatrice (en 1881) et la première présidente de l'Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs (U.F.P.S.). Son action permit aux artistes femmes d'entrer à l'Ecole nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris à partir de 1897, puis de concourir au Prix de Rome en 1903
