Depuis 1960, des fouilles ponctuelles, des sondages et des projections sont à l'origine de collections importantes. En 1988, la commune demande la création d'un musée afin d'assurer la pérennité des collections. Le musée est inauguré en 1990.
Les atouts de ce musée sont : Vie quotidienne en Alsace à l'époque gallo-romaine (rites funéraires, armée, religion, vie domestique), fin Ier-Ve siècle après Jésus-Christ.
La visite du musée est accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite, aux personnes souffrant de déficiences auditives, mentales et psychiques. L'intérêt du lieu : Bâtiment réalisé en 1991 par le cabinet Mongiello & Plisson architectes à Colmar.
