Ce carton de tapisserie gouaché a été réalisé par Marc Saint-Saëns, à l'échelle de la future tapisserie pour servir de modèle au lissier. La méthode de travail utilisée est celle du carton numéroté, dont son ami et peintre-cartonnier Jean Lurçat a renouvelé l'élaboration. Chaque chiffre correspond à une couleur de laine ce qui permet de faire réaliser le tissage avec une grande précision. La maquette est inversée gauche/droite pour correspondre au tissage sur l'envers, ce qui explique le fait que la signature de Marc Saint-Saëns apparaisse inversée. (Mireille Serniguet)
