Description
Acheté en 1861 à la vente d’un chirurgien féru de peinture ancienne, ce tableau avait figuré dans la collection Fesch dispersée de 1841 à 1845. Attribué à la main d’un suiveur du Dominiquin (1581-1641) puis du Guerchin (1591-1666), cette œuvre fut longtemps attribuée à Francesco Cairo (1607-1665), peintre lombard. On pense aujourd’hui que cette sibylle serait plutôt à replacer dans l’œuvre de Francesco del Cairo. Les peintres lombards ont tous deux multiplié les versions de ces femmes dont le turban rappelait l’origine orientale et qui avaient vocation à prophétiser la venue du Christ. On peut aussi y voir un portrait de femme en figure de fantaisie dans lequel le peintre montre une maîtrise du clair-obscur au contraste adouci par une connaissance de la peinture vénitienne.
