« En toute sincérité, je ne puis pour ma part me dire peintre autodidacte, car je n’ai pas appris seul à peindre. Je savais d’avance et du jour au lendemain, j’ai pu construire des tableaux qui ont été remarqués. Depuis j’ai évidemment quelque peu évolué. Mon armature change peu de principe et la couleur l’habille comme l’écorce habille le tronc de l’arbre. » (« Peintres autodidactes », in Aux sources de l’art, numéro hors série de L’Architecture d’aujourd’hui, avril 1946)##Chaissac est maître de son style dans cette gouache où fusionnent les recherches de l’artiste et de l’artisan. Le fond tacheté renvoie aux modèles de papiers peints mais le style naïf de ses premiers essais fait place à un ton plein de fantaisie. Les silhouettes de ce couple s’allongent et la palette, radieuse, s’enrichit. En 1946, une autre version de cette œuvre fut reproduite en pleine page pour illustrer un article revenant « aux sources de l’art ». L’auteur y saluait Chaissac comme « un authentique peintre, dont l’art rejoint par sa pureté les grands rythmes des fresques de Saint-Savin ». L’épistolier en envoya le tiré-à-part à plusieurs de ses correspondants, notamment à Albert Gleizes qui ne manqua pas de le féliciter pour ces reproductions « joliment bien venues ».
