Description
« J’ai maintenant toute une collections de pierre peintes si bien que je merite plus que jamais mon surnom de marquis de Pympière. » (Lettre à Michel Ragon, 6 décembre 1948)#Les pierres incarnent parfaitement l’œuvre de Gaston Chaissac. Elles en sont la représentation idéale, d’une part parce qu’elles rappellent la pratique du glanage et de la cueillette qui prélude à la création, d’autre part parce qu’elles illustrent la primauté du matériau et l’exploitation de l’accident. Il en décore depuis 1940 mais les premières, qui furent réalisées pendant la guerre, ont pour la plupart disparu. L’artiste s’appuie sur les caractéristiques du support, sur ses contours et ses reliefs, pour donner corps et visage à son personnage. Sur son portrait le plus célèbre, réalisé durant l’été 1952 par Robert Doisneau, Chaissac pose avec cette pierre, devenue véritable emblème.
