Il s'agit du portrait de Sabine Houdon à l'âge de quatre ans que son père Jean-Antoine Houdon a représentée à différentes époques. Ce buste, avec celui où elle est décrite à dix-huit mois, est sans doute l'une des sculptures les plus célèbres de l'artiste qui fut très souvent copiée en différents matériaux. La fraîcheur et la spontanéité de l'expression, avec le visage légèrement tourné à droite, auréolé de boucles tombant sus ses épaules nues, la vivacité du regard (donnée par un petit cube en relief, simulant la pupille), les fossettes sur les joues et le menton, en font l'une des représentations sculptées les plus réussies de l'enfance au XVIIIe siècle.
