peinture à l'huile sur toile ; A l’âge de 20 ans Simon Denis part travailler à Paris dans l’atelier de Jean Baptiste Lebrun puis s’établit à Rome, puis à Naples où il devient peintre à la Cour de Joseph Bonaparte. D’abord influencé par la tradition de la peinture flamande et animalière dont il gardera le précepte de l’étude d’après nature, il s’oriente vers la figuration de paysages arcadiques à la manière de Claude Lorrain. Cette œuvre est une des rares peintures qu’il ait réalisées avant son départ pour Paris. Simon Denis saisit la nature au moment où les éléments se déchainent, cet instant où le vent vient déposer sur les arbres les premières gouttes de pluie avant l’orage. Les petites figurines féminines et les vaches sont ici de simples figurantes dans un majestueux décor aux résonnances idéales. Cette peinture montre une volonté de réalisme mélangée à une conception idéalisée de la nature, ce qui est la substance même du néoclassicisme, courant auquel Simon Denis peut être rattaché. Seules deux œuvres de cet artiste figurent dans des collections publiques françaises.
