Mais l’objectif est-il seulement de montrer une scène de marché plaisante, répondant au goût de l’époque pour cet exotisme ? Si la femme assise semble résignée, la jeune fille debout tient curieusement un vase en équilibre dans sa main droite, regardant bien le peintre comme pour lui signifier un message. C’est elle qui attire le regard, avec sa coiffe géométrique, ses bijoux et son air royal. Sa dignité et sa beauté sont sans doute pour le peintre une manière d’évoquer la puissante et savante civilisation pharaonique, qui faisait déjà l’admiration des archéologues du XIXème siècle. La pyramide d’oranges, malicieusement installée au sol, constitue un écho supplémentaire à cette peinture en forme d’hommage.
