Description
La mise en page se réfère à d'anciennes gravures. Mais Champaigne sait insuffler une vie puissante qui répond au texte de l'évangéliste Luc. Elizabeth âgée, au sixième mois de sa grossesse, reçoit la visite de sa cousine Marie. Dans la grandiose architecture du seuil de la demeure de Zacharie, l'artiste confère un mouvement chaleureux à la rencontre des deux femmes, divinement instruites du mystère de leur maternité (corps penché, bouches expressives, intensité des regards, langage des mains). Dan sce tableau, Champaigne retrouve la tradition française du portrait et lui donne une force et une dignité nouvelle. Par une composition très équilibrée, un dessin épuré et une grande mâtrise dans l'utilisation des tons froids, Champaigne soumet l'ensemble à un goût du Beau idéal qui s'affirme aux dépens du réalisme. D'après la tradition, Marie emprunterait les traits de la fille de l'artiste tandis qu'une vieille religieuse servi de modèle pour sainte Elizabeth.
