Description
La représentation de Dürer, parallèle au plan de l'image, reflète, à n'en pas douter l'art des Saints Sépulcres sculptés, qui s'était répandu au XVème siècle. L'iconographie de la mise au tombeau s'était considérablement enrichie et codifiée à la fin du Moyen Âge, sous la double influence des confréries et des Mystères de la Passion. Tandis que des ordres religieux, tels ceux du Saint-Sépulcre ou des Sépulcrines, renouvelaient la dévotion au Saint-Tombeau, la mise en scène théâtrale régissait un certain agencement du thème : disposition en frise, mimique et particularité des costumes. Tous les personnages de la scène précédente sont réunis une dernière fois autour du corps de Jésus. Devant l'ouverture du sépulcre taillé dans le roc, Joseph d'Arimathie et Nicomède font descendre précautionneusement le Christ dans son tombeau. Saint Jean, Marie, Marie Madeleine et une sainte femme forment le demi-cercle recueilli de la composition.
