Rare dans l’oeuvre de Paul Gauguin, ce portrait sobrement mis en scène surprend par le contraste entre le visage assez ingrat du modèle, dont l’identité demeure incertaine, et l’aspect très décoratif de la toile considérée dans son ensemble.#En 1886, le peintre, futur père spirituel des Nabis, utilise encore la touche hachurée des impressionnistes. Mais déjà il manie la couleur avec une audace nouvelle, comme dans le rouge du foulard qui flamboie au centre de la composition, donnant son éclat et son équilibre au tableau. La jeune fille se tient devant un papier peint aux fleurs stylisées que l’on retrouve dans d’autres peintures de la même année, ce qui pourrait signifier qu’elle a posé dans l’appartement même de Gauguin.#Cette oeuvre, qui a figuré dans la huitième exposition des Impressionnistes avec le seul titre Portrait, a appartenu au marchand d’art Ambroise Vollard.
