Plusieurs feuilles. Le bas et la partie droite ont été raboutés ; Jean-Paris de Montmartel est vu à mi-corps, le visage de face, le buste de trois-quarts droit. Il porte une veste à boutons dorés, sans col, en velours gris doublé de fourrure blanche qui apparaît à la bordure. Assis dans un fauteuil dont on ne voit que le haut du dossier, il a les mains dans un manchon de fourrure brune dont la partie supérieure est seule visible, au bas du portrait, et maintient sous son bras gauche, un tricorne noir à passementeries dorées. Il porte une perruque bouclée qui lui tombe sur les épaules. Son cou est entouré d'une étoffe blanche. Fond uniformément bleu.
