Description
Gravure au burin sur papier, épreuve du 2ème état (II/II) ; au centre de la partie inférieure, monogramme avec le grand D. Désignée au catalogue du musée sous le titre Effets de Jalousie, par référence à l'interprétation proposée par Bartsch qui y voyait une allégorie, cette estampe a été rattachée par Panofsky à l'histoire légendaire d'Hercule. Plus précisément, il s'agirait de la représentation d'un épisode narré par l'historien grec Xénophon : jeune, Hercule fut mis à l'épreuve, à la croisée d'un chemin, par le choix entre deux femmes séduisantes. L'une, d'une beauté simple et discrète, encourageait le héros à l'effort pour atteindre au bonheur, tandis que l'autre, coquette et tentatrice, promettait douceurs et insouciance. Hercule devait résister et choisir la voie la plus héroïque. Par le traitement dramatisé de l'épisode, qui se transforme en affrontement, Dürer s'est aussi rapproché de l'iconographie médiévale du Combat des Vices et des Vertus. La jeune femme qui incarne le Plaisir, reconnaissable à sa nudité lascive et à sa coiffure recherchée, repose dans les bras d'un satyre, image on ne peut plus claire de la luxure. Le bras levé, elle tente de se protéger des coups que lui destine la Vertu, jeune femme pudiquement drapée et aux cheveux sagement voilés. Il y a ici superposition d'un thème médiéval et d'un thème humaniste qui prend sa source dans la littérature antique. Sophie Renouard de Bussierre a fait remarquer que cette oeuvre, d'une grande maîtrise technique, était contemporaine d'études dessinées par Dürer d'après les maîtres du Quattrocento italien. La composition gravée s'inspire en effet très précisément de détails de trois dessins : La Mort d'Orphée, La Bataille des dieux marins d'après Mantegna, et l'Enlèvement d'une femme sabine d'après Pollaiuolo.
