Description
Cette étude préparatoire a été réalisée par Jean-Paul Laurens pour illustrer la tragédie de Faust de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1842) parue aux Editions des Bibliophiles à Paris, en 1885. Cette édition du Faust II comporte, en frontispice, un portrait de l'auteur d'après le tableau de May (1779) et 6 planches hors texte de Jean-Paul Laurens, gravées en taille-douce par Eugène-André Champollion (1848-1901). Ce projet, qui n'a finalement pas été retenu par l'éditeur, illustre l'acte I, scène 2, "Devant la porte de la ville" (Vor dem Tor). Il s'agit du passage où Faust se laisse emporter à la mélancolie et rêve vainement d'avoir des ailes pour être comme un dieu. (Claire Dalzin)
