Description
Un homme richement vêtu est debout sur le seuil de sa porte. D'un geste il fait signe à une jeune femme et son fils de quitter les lieux. Le patriarche Abraham renvoie vers le désert l'Egyptienne Agar et son fils Ismaël. Sarah, qui avait demandé ce renvoi, assiste à la scène en compagnie du jeune Isaac. La composition, qui illustre un épisode de la Génèse, est en partie redevable à une peinture de Lastman, l'un des maîtres de Rembrandt. Elle offre au graveur l'occasion d'une mise en page où le décor s'efface devant les protagonistes du drame. Une grande sobriété marque cette évocation.
