'Dans l'aquarelle, il y a la transparence de la couleur véhiculée par l'eau laissant parfois apparaître le papier, mais lorsque je suis insatisfait - car je travaille une aquarelle autant qu'une toile - je lave avec une éponge et je reprends les parties qui ne me satisfont pas. Je travaille avec l'aquarelle comme je travaille avec l'huile, longtemps et par périodes. Je ne mène jamais de front l'huile et l'aquarelle, car il s'agit de techniques à la fois proches et fort éloignées. A les voir, on pourrait croire mes aquarelles spontanées, je les travaille pourtant énormément et j'utilise beaucoup l'éponge tant que le papier conserve sa résistance.' Maurice Estève
