Anonyme — 17th Century

Description

Cuivre, travail au repoussé. ; Rafraîchissoir à décor de godrons, dont les deux mufles de lion portent les anneaux de suspension et les quatre pieds en forme de pattes de lion sont soudés au bassin. Ces récipients avaient généralement la forme de baquets ou de cuvettes et étaient le plus souvent en cuivre, en airain ou en bois. A la fin du 17e siècle, on en fit également en vermeil, en argent, en porcelaine ou en faïence. Ils pouvaient être très richement ornés de figures en relief ou d'incrustations d'émaux. Mais le plus grand nombre était simplement en cuivre repoussé. Les rafraîchissoirs permettaient de maintenir les vins au frais. Au lieu de glace, difficile à trouver et à conserver, on utilisait du sel marin ou mieux encore du "sel ammoniac" afin de garder l'eau fraîche.
