Everything you need to know

France has approximately 1,220 museums bearing the 'Museo de France' label, awarded by the Ministry of Culture. This label guarantees the quality of collections and their accessibility to the public.

The 'Museo de France' label is a protected designation granted by the Ministry of Culture to museums that present a matter of public interest. It involves obligations regarding conservation, restoration, and making collections available to the public.

Use our 'Museums around me' tool, which geolocates you and displays all labeled museums within a radius of your choice, from 5 to 100 km. You can also search by department or city.

Access conditions vary by institution. Many offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month. Visitors under 18 and those aged 18-25 residing in the EU benefit from free admission to national museums.

Collections cover all fields: fine arts, archaeology, natural history, decorative arts, ethnology, sciences and techniques, contemporary art. Each museum has its own specificities related to its territory and history.

Yes, a large part of the collections are digitized and accessible via the Joconde database from the Ministry of Culture. Our site allows you to consult artworks' records and search them by artist, technique, or period.

The Louvre Museum in Paris is the largest museum in France and the world by its exhibition area, with over 72,000 m² and approximately 35,000 works on display. The Orsay Museum and the Pompidou Center are among the most visited.

All data come from the open platform of the Ministry of Culture (data.culture.gouv.fr), including the Muséofile database for museums and the Joconde database for artworks. These data are distributed under Open License v2.0 (Etalab).

Most national museums (Louvre, Orsay, Quai Branly, Pompidou, Guimet, Cluny, etc.) are free on the first Sunday of the month. Some municipal museums, such as those of the City of Paris, are permanently free for their permanent collections.

Museums in France are classified according to their main thematic domain: fine arts, archaeology, natural history, decorative arts, ethnology, sciences and techniques, history, contemporary art, or photography. DellArte allows filtering by theme from the museums page.
